Art direction, design, build, real-time 3D

A site, and a painted walk through native bush, for a residential retreat for women in medicine. It has two halves: one that answers questions, and one that takes you somewhere.

Two halves

One answers questions — the retreat, the dates, the place. The other takes you somewhere, and you choose it: it is never imposed.

The brief

Say less, promise less, be plain about what four days can and cannot do — and still make somebody want to go.

The walk on a phone: the track through painted bush in the mist, one line of the site’s words above it.

The walk

247 metres of track and 41,820 plants of fifteen native species, sown by rule rather than by hand and drawn live in the browser. The scroll is the only thing moving you.

The walk as the site shows it: tall trunks in the mist and one line of its words, “It takes about a day to stop listening for a pager.”

The words

They began as type standing in the forest. Measured at 17 : 1 in one place and 2.6 : 1 in another, they came out onto the page, where they always read.

Palm fronds over the track, light in the mist beyond.

Painted

A watercolour pass over the forest: strokes laid along the grain, pigment pooling at the edges.

Nīkau palms among tall trunks in the mist.

At rest

Drawn lightly while you move, and sharp about a second after you stop.
