The island grown: ferns and grasses on a floating stone, the sea around it grey-green.

The bare stone afloat on a calm grey sea, its reflection below it.
01Before anything grows

The stone

Eighty centimetres of bare stone, alone on the ocean. Everything after it is at its real size: the albatross spans two and a half metres.

The stone alone on the ocean, wide.
02Alone on the ocean

Overcast

A cloud deck over everything, the sun spread to an 11° disc to give it a direction and nothing more, a silver-green sea.

Close over the hollow in the stone, rain falling into it.

Low over the rim: the basin in the stone filling with water.
04III · The spring

Eleven beats

Thirty-two frames apart, each with a camera of its own. Rain fills a hollow, a spring wells up, an albatross crosses and does not land — and everything grows from there.

An albatross gliding over the grey sea.
05IV · The bird
Moss taking hold round the water in the stone.
06VII · Takes hold
Ferns and grasses grown over the stone, seen from high above the dark sea.

Loops

Each of these is a two-second loop in Cycles: the frame holds, and only the living things move. From the fifth beat on, the lens is at f/5.6.

The whole living stone on the sea, ferns along its top.

Live

Rebuilt to run live in the browser from Blender’s own cameras, growth and light. The sea is not a loop: a wave spectrum cut into twenty-four trains.
